vlc doesn't play audio at all or with distorted echo when playing wmv files

After some initial distortions at the beginning the video seems to be fine, it is just the audio that is missing. The system has ffmpeg 1.1.3 installed and vlc is installed from vlc-2.0.git (output via alsa). Playing the same file with mplayer works. Example files can be found on msdn's channel 9.
