Subtitles doesn't work when playing via Chromecast

As also reported in https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=142343 - when playing a file with subtitles (tried both embedded into a .mkv as well as a separate .srt) subtitles doesn't show. When playing on the phone itself or mirroring the screen though google home to the same Chromecast, subtitles show.

This is normal. This is not supported.

Is there any plan on supporting it in the future? At least for my use-case, this is a really important feature. Thank you for all your hard work!

Well, the issue is that Chromecast does not support many subtitles, and reencoding everything is a waste of CPU...

Just wondering why videostream extension is able to support casting of extensions while playing mkv, mp4, etc through desktop then? How did they make it work?

They reencode everything.

Is it possible for us to be given the option to re-encode everything despite the waste in CPU? For practical purposes for me as well, I won't be able to use this new casting feature without the ability to view subtitles. At least until Google decides to support subtitles being embedded in the metadata? (if ever), I hope it is considered.

Edit: On the issue where it says "We would need to extract/transcode all subtitles first." for side-loading subs, is that still better than re-encoding everything?

Cool, glad to see someone else has brought this up as well. I noticed this last night when trying to cast a movie for my parents (English is their second language and subtitles help them greatly).

Thanks for the responses and for all your work supporting VLC, would be happy to help with testing etc if you ever decide to try and implement this.

Can I also ask for this possibility. For me as a user needing subtitles, it is much better to have subtitles with inefficienct CPU usage, than not to have subtitles at all. Not much point avoiding wasting CPU if the programme isn't doing what I need it to do.

VLC is so much the best video player, I really want to carry on using as much as possible.

Would like this option as well, as non-english person it'd be great to have the ability to add subtitles. I know Videostream supports this, but of course I'd rather use VLC.

I'd like to vote to include this option as well. As said, I'd rather burn CPU cycles and watch movies with subtitles than not :)

We already are working to bring this feature, milestone is set to VLC v3.1.

Fantastic. Since VLC has been my fave video/audio players for years, glad to see the subtitle situation is being taken seriously. For me, the subtitles not playing was ALMOST a deal breaker due to hearing problems.

You can screencast your device on Chromecast for now (as a workaround)

Out of curiosity are we positive this isn't achievable without hardcoding the subtitles? Netflix and Plex both seem to be able to do this with some type of text overlay.

Of course. Netflix or Plex are using CC as pull-model, not with live.
