How to find the release version?

Hi, I am maintainer of Slackware packages on SlackBuilds.org and I wonder how you guys set the release version which is used on the binaries on https://artifacts.videolan.org/x264/release-debian-amd64/. Example release 3053 for the commit c347e7a0. I saw on pipeline job when you run .version.sh it has the version inside, but I didn't find when.

My point with asking this is to update the information on building x264 package for Slackware.

Could you not tag you releases so these can be found more easily? Having a tag makes it possible to bump packages in distributions.

Yeah, running a git tag $(git rev-list --count <commit>) <commit> in the end of the build would be great.
