secondary subtitles like in PowerDVD

it would be great if vlc could display subtitles from two sources (files/channels) at the same time. this would allow for learning languages as well as a convenient way for watching a movie for different language-speaking spectators. /joe

We are working on it. It will be handled through a LUA extension.

Any chance you could get this done before my 30 day free trial of PowerDVD expires? ;)

But seriously, this should be regarded as an essential feature, not part of 'Features Paradize'. And it has been in the backlog an awfully long time...

VLC is (almost) entirely developed by volunteers in their spare time. So, we need a volunteer caring about this :-)

I can't wait to test it (Win XP). A hotkey to turn on the 2-nd subtitle and cycle through available subtitles is sufficient. Perhaps later it could be improved: VLC menu options, position, font, encoding, colour, changes on-the-fly, ...

Great, I only tested it on ubuntu currently.

What went wrong on this commit?

It needs to change some core parts, so it is rejected. But I can’t really figure out a way to do it without changing the core parts.

While implementing the secondary subtitles support, please check how the code is ready for possible improvements of related text-to-speech renderer for subtitles in the future (sub source: (disabled/)primary/secondary; visibility: show/hide; speed; volume). Perhaps you could define som hints for easier improvements without massive rework of currently being implemented code.
