Japanese kana symbols doesn't displayed in OSD on Linux even when selected font with Japanese kana
As suggested in #5662 (closed) I fill separate ticket. VLC display rectangles instead of all Japanese kana symbols in OSD with fonts like Andale Mono, Courier New, DejaVu Serif, DejaVu Sans Mono, Droid Sans Mono, FreeMono, FreeSerif, Liberation Mono, Liberation Serif, Ubuntu Mono (I check every listed font - all of them definitely have Japanese kana). But when I select font that not universal but created for Japanese users (Ume font family or for example TakaoPGothic) VLC display Japanese kana in OSD just fine but non-Japanese non-latin symbols is broken in such fonts (except Droid Sans Japanese font). Another intresting thing with Droid Sans font family. LibreOffice display in fonts list seven types of Droid Sans: Droid Sans, Droid Sans Arabic, Droid Sans Fallback, Droid Sans Hebrew, Droid Sans Japanese, Droid Sans Mono, Droid Sans Thai. Japanese kana is present in Droid Sans Fallback, Droid Sans Japanese and Droid Sans Mono. VLC display in fonts list only Droid Sans and Droid Sans Mono. I can not select Droid Sans Japanese font in VLC settings because it's just not listed (like other four types of Droid Sans).
So there is two problems:
- Some bug with handling Japanese kana with universal fonts.
- Some fonts doesn't available in fonts list.
Steps to reproduce first problem:
- Select any font listed in second sentence of description of this ticket for OSD.
- Open video file with Japanese name (example: "日本語.mkv") and look at OSD.
Steps to reproduce second problem:
- Install Droid fonts family.
- Try to select Droid Sans Japanese in VLC settings for OSD.
Additional information:
VLC 1.3.0 git20120109 installed from ppa:videolan/master-daily PPA on Kubuntu 11.10.
All fonts installed from default repository. For example Droid font family from ttf-droid pacakge (download link available here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/ttf-droid ).
Subtitles codepage in VLC settings is expectedly unrelated to this bug (I was check local, system codeset, Shift JS and UEC-JP).
In #5662 (closed) when I say "VLC OSD display empty rectangles instead of all non-latin symbols" I mistake - there is no such problems with cyrillic for example. Only with Japanese kana and maybe Korean and Chinese (I didn't check yet but expect same problems).
