can't play .PMD Qualcomm polymorphic phone ringer files
Back in the 2000s I used Bitpim to transfer files from my Sanyo Katana feature phone (pre-Android). I found the file bitpim.db_blobs/ringers/Screen Saver Preview.pmd
. It's not an Adobe PageMaker design file, it's a Qualcomm "polymorphic ringtone" file according to this thread
users are churning these out by the dozens for the Samsung phones using a tool from Qualcomm called CMX Studio. Do you want to see an example? I have one I created by just copying a voice memo into my ringer dir and another created by a user in CMX Studio. Neither is recognized by the phone until the .pmd extension is added. I'm not sure but I believe you can alternatively add a .mid extension.
I tried changing the extension to .mid
and VLC had all kinds of errors playing the file. I also tried changing the extension to .qcp
just in case, and that didn't help.
This is pretty obscure but it would be nice if VLC could play it. Here's the file I found Screen_Saver_Preview.pmd. Someone on Twitter provided a pointer to the old CMX Studio software, there might be more details about it on backups of developer.brewmp.com
on the Internet Archive.
