Problem with skipping in file, subtitle selection and more
Background: I have an HD connected to my router where I store media. The disk is formatted in FAT32 since it is the only FS the router supports. This means that the max file size is limited to 4 GB. As reference, 1 h of BluRay is ≈ 4,5 GB.
To workaround this I use mkvtoolnix to split MKVs that are bigger than 4 GB in smaller segements. While I do that I also usually include subtitles for two different languages. I then play these MKVs using VLC on my Apple TV. That is the background. Now I have several problems:
-
There is a gap of a few seconds when VLC switches files. With AVIs it is seamless.
-
I just watched someting that was about 1 h and the switch took place at 48 minutes. After the switch the timeline is broken. It shows the current time correct, depending on your expectations: the time is 48 minutes and higher so relative to the length of whole episode it is correct but relative to the part (that is only 12 minutes) it is incorrect. However, after the switch, the graphical display of the position is no doubt broken: it is stuck at the end (rightmost).
-
Interestingly enough, if you pause and scroll back you see 10:33 and -1:27 = the numbers add up to the length of the segment but if you start playing at that position, VLC restarts at the beginning of the segment (that is, at 48 m of episode as a whole and 0 min at the current segment, so not one number is correct here).
-
The last segment has 3 chapters, 40 m, 50 m and 1h01m. When starting the last segment, since we are at 48 m of the whole episode, the 40 m chapter is highlighted. However, selecting the two latter chapters have no effect at all.
-
Pausing and trying to scroll forward has no effect (and as I mentioned in (3), scrolling backwards, irrespective of how little, always restart from the beginning of the segment).
-
VLC forgets the subtitle selection when switching segments. I had chosen the second subtitle when I watched the first segment but VLC reverted to the first subtitle after the switch.
All in all, this whole functionality is pretty broken :-(
This is on an ATV4 that is updated with the latest tvOS and the latest available VLC.
