WPL not in list of file types in Open File dialog window
OS: Windows 10 VLC version: current version 3.0.7.1 and earlier on Windows
The problem: The user clicks Media>Open File and gets a dialog window, as in the attached screenshot. This dialog window has 5 possible filters for screening file types: Media Files, Video Files, Audio Files, Playlist Files and All Files (the user can select which filter he wants to use). The file type “*.wpl” is not included in either Media Files or Playlist Files. All other supported playlist file types are included in both. VLC has supported WPL files for the last 10 years, yet this list still hasn’t been updated.
Impact of problem: 1) The uninformed new user thinks WPL files aren’t supported and gives up and finds another media player. [Or worse, wastes a lot of effort converting WPLs to M3Us, as one user in the forum did]. 2) The knowledgeable user has to first select the All Files filter every time he wants to open a WPL. Then he finally sees his WPL files and can select one – and it indeed does play. This is time-wasting and annoying.
Location of problem code: Unknown – I couldn’t figure out what module handles this.
Implementation details: This should be trivial to implement. Typically in a Windows dialog box like this the filter is simply specified by passing a string to the code that displays the window. Just add “*.wpl” in two places in that string.
Note: The same dialog box seems to be displayed from two different places: Media>Open File… and Media>Open Multiple Files>Add.. Make sure both these and any other similar dialog windows are fixed.
