Avoid Locking Files During Playback (Windows)
With Windows Media Player, it's possible to rename, move, & delete files in Explorer while they're playing. This was also possible in older versions of Media Player Classic (see: https://trac.mpc-hc.org/ticket/3607). I believe this is a feature of NTFS (per one of the comments on the MPC link).
With VLC however, Windows Explorer says the action cannot be completed because the file is open. It would be wonderful if VLC could behave like WMP/MPC, as being able to rename files without having to close & reopen them is extremely handy. A couple examples:
-
While organizing video footage, I open a given file & can form the name as it plays, revising as needed. With VLC, I have to open the file, determine the full name (i.e. type it into a text editor), close the video, then name the file & reopen if I want to continue viewing. This leads me to always use WMP while sorting my video collection.

While downloading a movie with Opera you can watch it with VLC - but when the download finishes, Opera tries to rename the file (remove the temporary .opdownload extension), but the file is locked by VLC, so it fails and Opera starts the download over again.
