VLC cannot playback VDR recordings with .h264 stream

VLC media player is able to playback recordings created by VDR.

Since version 1.7.0, VDR is able to record .h264 streams in VDR files. The file format itself is unchanged PES as I understand, but the MPEG2-stream is replaced by a .h264 stream.

Would it be possible if VLC media player could be adapted to support this file format, too?

I could provide files for testing on my web space, please just tell me.

Mmh, they have done a really ugly thing. There is no way to identify the video codec (ie detecting mpeg2 or h264) except by trying to guess by looking at the ES. They really could have added a PSM packet at the start at least (but VDR files are so broken that it does not surprise me). I will not implement ES probing anytime soon but I may do it latter.

Didn't vdr started to change recording format to TS in 1.7 tree anyway?

Well, playback of raw .h264 is broken if in .264 files.
