VLC is using much more resources [on twitch stream] using Wayland session

Bug has been noticed on Archlinux using latest stable VLC version from the repository (2.2.4-6) but is around for a couple of weeks.months now, at least since Archlinux switched to Wayland as the default session.

Prior to this switch, and still today if I explicitely open a Xorg session, when playing a stream from twitch.tv through tools like livestreamer, streamlink and their GUI versions, CPU usage was between 35% and 50%, and everything was smooth, even at full quality (Source stream, so probably 1080p).

Same computer, same OS, everything identical but just a Wayland session instead result in VLC using whole CPU and a stream being partially jerky.

You can see the performance issue on the two joined screenshots through the htop view and CPU usage plot in the top bar.

There is no support for Wayland in VLC 2.2. Without further infos, it looks like GLX and XVideo are either missing or inefficient in your XWayland. That would be well beyond the scopes of the VLC project and of this bug tracker.

Well, I don't know in details which elements are required and used by the different multimedia players, but if this is XWayland side, why mpv for example isn't affected at all and run the same way whether I run Xorg or Wayland on this computer?

It could be that mpv supports Wayland, or uses XWayland in a different way that has no performance problems. I can't answer that question for you. You have the elements, not me.

And in any case, VLC 2.2 is not supposed to run on Wayland, and nobody has proposed to backport Wayland support there.

@Porkepix: Can you try a VLC 3.0.0 to check what is the CPU usage?

Can you also share the logs in both situations?

not sure if it is related, but there is a freeze / crash bug with vlc, which results at least in weston taking 100% of one core. for gnome i was not able to track it down yet. more info here

there is https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/vlc-git/ which i will try if it compiles.

Sorry for the delay, I hadn't access to the implied computer for a while.

Here are logs on a local file play using the 2.2.4 build. Problem seems to be the same as with streaming (I couldn't keep that case being unable to ask for logs as VLC was launched through another software).

I wanted to try a 3.0 build as asked, but sadly the implied computer is using a x86 (32 bits) installation and nightlies.videolan.org only provide amd64 ones.

I did failed to compile it myself either by hand. I could take a look at AUR versions if needed, but less control compared to versions compiled by hand or provided by the project itself.

Anyway, feel free to ask for further informations or tests if I can provide them.

PS: I guess title can be edited to remove what's between the square brackets: the problem seems to affect every video resource.
