The VLC Qt GUI uses oldstyle design elements on Vista since the 3.0 nightly of 2016-07-03
The problem should be obvious from the screenshots.
I don’t know which design the controls assumed, my best guess is that it’s resembling the classic Windows 2000 design also available on XP by default, but it could also be some other fallback.
Further Information
The screenshot of 2016-07-03 I’ve made with the config folder, %AppData%\Roaming\vlc
, renamed whereas the 2016-06-29 one is with my usual config in place; however, I tried the newer one with the config and the older one without it as well (yielding the same results).
I set 2.2.5
as milestone since it’s the same for the nightlies of this version and it looks quite broken (meaning it should probably be fixed before release).
The earliest build available for 2.2.5
on Win32 is dated 2016-07-11 and already shows this design change. Just to make it explicit, stable 2.2.4
is fine.
Also, sorry for only telling you that late, but it just so happened that I grabbed the last nightly before the change and didn’t have to update since then for a long time, until 2016-09-08, when I did get a nightly but thought it was merely a fluke for this in-development software. HDD space was scarce so I deferred getting a newer version to test multiple times thereafter.
