Real-time improvement of subtitles
To deprecate the plethora of "subtitle fixers" out there and programmer's lives wasted on these, I suggest to implement this functionality at the core of the world's favourite video player.
Most of the features can be done with single lines of regular expressions, and will thus pose a quick victory over the top subtitles annoyances aggravating top entertainment across the globe:
- Do not show credits ("Ripped by...", URLs, etc.).
- Do not show hearing impaired ("JOHN:", "[WHISPERING]", etc.).
- Ignore formatting (tags).
- Do best guess on moronic time codes.
- Distribute text nicely across two lines
- Gracefully handle consecutive identical subtitles.
The features can be divided over two new preference settings, here shown with suggested defaults:
