Problem with sleep mode and audio playback on OSX 10.10
OSX 10.10.5 Yosemite (MacBook Pro Retina - Early 2015), VLC 2.2.3 Weatherwax (Intel 64bit), Energy Saving (Sleep Mode) set to 5 mins, using standard native audio output (built-in speakers, built-in audio drivers).
From what I can tell, during audio playback VLC will (as intended) dim screen and prevent sleep mode after a period of inactivity; however, there is a bug that causes the audio being played not to be heard. Or, alternatively, maybe VLC doesn't prevent sleep mode during audio playback, although this seems unlikely considering the observed behavior.
Here is my use case with detailed descriptions of what is happening:
Observed behavior:
- Construct playlist in VLC
- Start playing music
- Start working out in my room while listening to music ...5 minutes elapse...
- Computer switches into Energy Saving mode, screen dims
- Song currently playing will finish
- VLC switches to next song, but no audio is heard ...1 minute elapses...
- Frustrated that workout is interrupted, walk over to computer and touch trackpad
- Computer screen comes back on, audio returns, song is at 1:00 mark (this tells me that the process is active and the computer has been prevented from entering sleep mode, but for some reason the audio is not outputted)
Desired behavior:
- Construct playlist in VLC
- Start playing music
- Start working out in my room while listening to music
- Finish 30-minute workout with uninterrupted audio
There is no such issue with video playback. It will continue uninterrupted (without screen dim or entering sleep mode) just fine even if I don't periodically touch my trackpad. Basically, I think audio playback should function the same way, but it doesn't.
Please let me know if I can provide any additional information (logs, software versions, etc.) to help you track down this bug. Thanks.
