iOS: VLC refuses to download files from URLs that appear to have a wrong extension
I'm using VLC for iOS 2.7.5.
When downloading files, VLC first checks file extension in the URL. If it is not recognized (like http://example.org/xxx.yyy), error message is shown, and the request doesn't even hit the network.
Actually, path component in HTTP URLs has nothing to do with the file's type, because it is determined by Content-Type
header. Also, VLC can detect file's type from its content: for example, if I save an MP3 file with OGG extension, VLC will play it. So, the URL is not actually used to determine the file's type, and the check that it "looks" valid is not necessary.
