Is it possible to do it using the opengl vout via va_wayland.h and an egl extension ?

For compositors implementing zwp_linux_dmabuf_v1 (at least Weston and Mutter), new VA-API allows export of its buffers to dmabuf, which saves a full buffer copy compared to using GL.

Yes, we are already using dmabuf.
