Converting and saving files causes VLC to freeze if playback repeat is enabled

If I have currently selected to repeat a single item on my playlist, saving (converting) something causes VLC to get stuck in an infinite loop trying to read the item called "Streaming" that appears.

As a result the program becomes unresponsive to mouse input (however double clicking on some music file in windows explorer causes it to play with no issues - but VLC remains unresponsive).

Issue is worsened in Version 2.2.4, windows 8.1: Freezing happens even before the target file is written. I try converting a ".MOV" file into mp3, then the generated ".ts" file is empty.
