It seems the most recent update made play/pause/fast forward/etc. functions of remote controls (I have Harmony and a URC-R40) stop working with VLC. I tested this with my second Xbox which hadn't been plugged in for 2+ weeks and still had the 2.5 release. Remote controls worked fine, until I updated and then they stopped working. Regular Xbox commands still work (up down, A, B, etc).
Thanks

Hey guys,
play/pause/fast forward seem to work fine for me using the iOS Xbox app or an Xbox remote control.
Could you please share some more details? Are you talking about video or audio playback?
Hi Martin, thanks for responding.
I only use it for video, so that's my experience. And I'm referring to a programmable infrared "TV" remote. My main one is the Logitech Harmony 650. The "regular" functions work fine (up, down, select, etc), but its the video functions which seem to have stopped working (play/pause/fast forward).
It's interesting that the Xbox remote itself still works. I wonder if it's infrared.
I have also noticed this issue with the Xbox One Media Remote since the last update. I will note that I am unsure VLC updated properly for me on Xbox, however, as I also have an issue where the launcher icon is blank (white). I intend to try uninstalling and reinstalling to see if anything is different.
After the uninstall/reinstall I did to correct the icon, I tried the Media Remote again. Play/Pause, Rewind, Fast Forward, and Stop all still did not function.
After some additional testing, the issue only seems to affect videos played over network (SMB, DLNA), but not from local USB storage (used a file on a flash drive to check). Media Remote worked fine for the video played from flash drive.
Media functions don't work on VLC, but they do in other video apps. That was recorded on an Xbox One X on OS 10.0.16299.4055 (I am not in the preview program). My other Xbox is an S, but I did not have tie to get the OS version (should be the most current for it).
@LoneFenris Good catch! All my playback is over LAN as well from a synology box. Did not think to test controls over USB video playback.
Plugged in a USB drive and can confirm media controls work on those video files.
Out of curiosity I did the following test:
a) Opened the app and played a video from my Synolgy over LAN. No media controls. Stopped playing this.
b) While keeping the app open, navigated to a USB drive with a movie on it and opened. Media controls worked like normal. Stopped playing this.
c) Navigated back to the Synology and opened up a video again. Full media controls worked again.
Seems like something is blocking those controls upon initial LAN playback, but once media is played over USB, they seem to stick. @LoneFenris can you confirm this by chance?
Good troubleshooting guys, but I still cannot reproduce the issue on my side.
I'm using an Xbox One S running RS3 and an infrared Xbox remote control. Playing files through both SMB and UPNP over WiFi.
Which OS version are you running?
Are you connected through WiFi or cable? Shouldn't matter but you never know..
i am having this exact same problem, and it happened at the exact same time, after the upgrade. it's driving me crazy. how did you say again, JR Mitz, to solve the problem? i'm not sure what Synology is. i'm using VLC on an Xbox One over my network. i've never used a USB with my Xbox. i'm not even sure where the port is. i knew immediately it was the upgrade because i have 2 remotes, one by Xbox, one by an off-brand company, and the VCR controls stopped working on both.
@Kayla6699 A Synology is a NAS so i should have the same setup as you (streaming over my local network). A temporary solution, that goes away once the app is closed and reopened, is to put a video file on a USB stick and plug it in to the Xbox (if you have an original Xbox One it's on the left side panel, close to the front, if you have an S or and X it should be in the bottom of the front panel). You open the video, confirm controls are working, then stop and go back to your network device (without closing the app, and controls should be working again).
@mfkl can correct me, but based on that commit I see, I think a fix has already been implemented, and I guess we're just waiting for it to be pushed to the store at this point?
thank you so much, JR. i will definitely try that if a fix doesn't show up pretty soon. that was much easier to understand. one of the reasons i love VLC so much is because i can so easily rewind. now i can't. i'll still have to check on the Xbox menus to see how to play from the USB. i'll let you know how it goes.
JR, the temporary fix does work for me. thanx again for the heads up. it's taking a very long time to get a fix for these most basic and needed functions. i just noticed that my STOP on the video controls doesn't even work. i have to go back to Home to stop a video. it's very frustrating.

@Kayla6699 If your remote has a button that corresponds to "Back" on the Xbox (the Xbox Media Remote does) that should (I think) still serve to return to the VLC file browser from a video if that's what you're trying to do. Everything else is still doable with the D-pad and the onscreen controls, it's just more annoying.
