oss audio output error: cannot write samples: Invalid argument

Updated vlc to 2.1.0 in a FreeBSD host.

Playing audio ends up with

"oss audio output error: cannot write samples: Invalid argument"

over and over again.

I am the maintainer of VLC in FreeBSD and it is affecting a lot of people. Let me know if I can provide any additional info.
