OS 10.9 Mavericks - Dock auto-hides when closing VLC

When opening VLC and then closing VLC under Mac OS 10.9 Macericks, the dock goes into auto-hide mode without the auto-hide dock checkbox selected under System Preferences --> Dock.

Also when closing VLC, it does this thing where it slides over to fullscreen mode, then closes and moves back to the main desktop where the dock auto-hides.

The only way to fix this is to check the dock auto-hide checkbox under System Preferences --> Dock and then unchecking the box again.
