No USB Audio on Mac OS X

When using the Tascam US-144 mkII USB audio output VLC does not produce any sound. All other audio (iTunes, Logic, Chrome) works through the external interface. And of course VLC works when using the internal speakers.

I am using OS X 10.8.2 and VLC 2.0.4. There was a similar ticket (#4834 (closed)), however it has been marked as resolved but I am still experiencing the same problem.
