VLC media player does not respect default audio language settings

Every time I play the movie MayaBasicsMovie.mov that comes with Autodesk Maya 2013, the audio language is Chinese or something like that. All attempts to change this behaviour in the preferences dialogs (English, en, EN) did not have the desired result.

This is the command issued by Maya: "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --started-from-file "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2013\movies\quickStart\MayaBasicsMovie.mov"
