Application stays minimized when a new video is opened

[Mac OS X v10.7.4 / VLC v2.0.1]

After playing a video in VLC and closing the video window (with the red 'X' button; VLC is still running), when I open a second video the video window doesn't reopen on the screen. I can hear the audio playing but I have to go down to the Dock and click on the VLC icon to get the video window to re-appear.
