Encode to H.264 always crashes on Win7 64-bit

I was trying to capture my desktop to an MPEG-4 video, but VLC immediately crashes. My steps to reproduce are

  • open VLC, go to File > !Convert/Save > Capture Device
  • Set Capture Mode: Desktop, press !Convert/Save
  • Choose a destination file, set video profile as "Video - H.264 + AAC" (either MP4 or TS option causes crash)
  • Press Start, and VLC immediately freezes

Besides desktop capture, I also tried converting a video (flv) to H.264 by the !Convert/Save dialog with the same outcome.

I have run gdb on a nightly from around 20120420, and here is what little backtrace it gives me:
