selecting subtitle track from menu stops playback

When I play back one Title from a VIDEO_TS folder and select an available subtitle track from the menu Video -> Subtitles -> "Track [no]- [language]" the playback is abruptly halted.

Selecting the same subtitle track via the DVD menu "on disc" works as expected.

This does not happen with the same VIDEO_TS in VLC 1.1.12, where everything works.

I will test with DVDs as well.
