Support for HbbTV to enable VLC as a "remote player" service
HbbTV standard is beeing pushed by broadcaster on the highend TV.
My anticipation is that it will become mainstream in a couple of year because it is simple to integrate and use already widespread standards.
I think HbbTV is a great opportunity for VLC to settle as the definitive broadcast middleware.
The idea is to improve the VLC broadcasting in the same way that was done for the "freeplayer" but sticking to the HbbTV standard specification instead.
Doing so, VLC would have to stream a metadata to indicate the stream is HbbTV complient (sending an URL to the VLC endpoint). Then, when pressing the "red button". This would open a "mini site" to the VLC that will keep streaming in the meanwhile. But, "web container" brought will enable VLC to get the remotecontrol keys and perform the expected task on the VLC side.
Expected usage :
- full remote control
- play ISO file directly : interract with anything that VLC supports right from your TV !
- access to any VLC feature from your TV : configure, parameter, etc
In my best dream, the initial stream trigger would be done thru a DLNA broadcast that will advertise for the stream. This could really make a "world dominatin" feature for lots of people. But AFAIK, for this very specific point, the support for DLNA+HbbTV scenario is not yet tested by anybody.
