VLC must be restarted if coreaudiod is restarted

Sometimes it is necessary to forcefully kill coreaudiod, when the system sound becomes garbled, and let it restart itself. Other programs (itunes, quicktime, flash, etc.) resume normal audio with a slight pause, but VLC needs to be completely restarted, otherwise it will not play audio again. I am seeing this occur on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), but I can't recall if this also occurred on Snow Leopard. I have verified this on multiple VLC versions: 1.1.8 - 1.1.12-git, but I no longer have access to a 10.6 machine to test if this was a problem there as well.
