Last.fm integration does not work on OS X 10.5.8

I've entered my username and password correctly, but submissions are not going through. I've restarted/reinstalled/reset preferences with no effect. Also tested this on another machine running the same version of VLC/OS X. (It might be nice if this feature (or in general any feature requiring submission to a 3rd party website) had some kind of testing option.)
