multiple PIDs per file

Not sure what jargon would properly apply, so I'll just describe as best I can.

Using VLC on Ubuntu Karmic (clean install). Problem is reproducible. Problem occurs with various file types: avi, wmv, mpg.

Description: If a given video is left paused for long periods, multiple PIDs occur, all with the same filename and path as source. Eventually this saturates system memory and swap, causing system to hang and become unresponsive to keyboard or mouse. I use backupPC on this system and have observed that having VLC running when backupPC starts always exacerbates the problem, usually requiring a KDM restart. I have not attempted to reproduce the backupPC conflict with other players, so I do not know if it is specific to VLC.
