vlc won't close properly from the dock icon

from the dock icon, os x latest snow leopard, latest vlc version, when I select quit, it never seems to actually quit until I click the icon again after I've let it try for a while. When I click the icon after a while, it then goes off, that is the "light" finally goes off under the icon that shows which programs are active. I just checked and waited for quite a while, it does eventually go off. But it goes off very quickly from the vlc menu. If I tire of waiting the longer time it takes to quit from the dock, I finally click the icon again and it instantly closes. This can't be the intended behavior, can it?

I have two macbook pro's, one 2008, one 2009 unibody. Same thing happens on both computers. I'm including the system profile for the 2009 unibody.
