Volume option doesn't have any effect

When starting vlc with the option '--volume' with different values no change in the actual volume can be noticed.

I use SuSE linux 11.2 with vlc 1.1.0.

Example: vlc --volume 10 music.mp3

I used this option with an older version of vlc and there it worked. Not sure which version that was, because that installation is accidentally gone. I guess it was 1.0.x.

Note: setting the volume with the GUI works perfectly.
