vlc won't quit using redefined shortcut & video window is shown

OS X 10.5.8; VLC v1.1.0 OSX intel 64bit

installed VLC over my old VLC, remapped some keys - one of them "quit" -> "q". But when I press 'q', I can see the on-screen-quit but VLC does not quit at all. Apple-Q does not quit too. Only Menu-quit works.

as long as there is a video window, 'q' does not quit. When I close only the video window or just start vlc without a video file to play, 'q' quits as expected.

resetting all preferences: the default shortcut Apple-q works in any case. Redefining quit to 'q' results in the very same will-not-close-behavior as described above.
