VLC doesn't play multichannel audio aka E-AC3

I have an Onkyo TX-NR708 7.2 multichannel audio system connected via SPDIF to my PC. VLC plays movies with any multi-channel sound format except movies with A/52 B Audio (aka E-AC3) sound (eac3) which plays them in stereo sound. I have played the same movies with E-AC3 with another player and the equipment reproduces the multi-channel sound perfectly, this shows that it is VLC that does not play that multi-channel audio format.
