Can't play media from SMB if password has '@' character

When trying to play a media located in a SMB/CIFS server with a user login that has '@' in his passwords, VLC fails and reports:

smb error: open failed for 'path/to/media' (Invalid argument)

Changing SMB password removing the character solves it.
