Subtitle resolution tied to video resolution - subs look bad on low-res video

In previous versions of VLC, when loading a .srt subtitle file onto a video, the resolution of the subtitles were always great and independent from the resolution of the video. Since downloading VLC 3.0.18, this has changed. If I'm watching a high-resolution, 1080p file, subtitles looks great, but if its something like 360p they look like like crap, pixelated as hell and are barely readable. A friend of mine is also experiencing this. I've tried resetting VLC preferences and nothing's changed. I reinstalled VLC 3.0.17 and this issue does not occur. As someone who often downloads obscure films to watch, and these films are usually not in the best quality, this makes VLC unusable for when I need subtitles.
