VTT subtitle language codes not recognized by VLC

I note that VLC does not recognize or respect the language codes included in the matching filename of the VTT subtitles.

Example

I have the below two files in a folder, VLC recognises the subtitle track as "Track 1" instead of "English". For SRT and other subtitles i dont have this issue.

  • Video1.MKV
  • Video.1.eng.vtt

Steps to reproduce: See the example above. Any MKV or video file and VTT file will work (.srt can easily be renamed to VTT subtitle).

My version

  • Windows 10, 64bit
  • VLC 3.0.16
