iOS: High Battery Drain When Playing MP3 files

I'm now experiencing an abnormally large amount of battery drain when using VLC to play mp3 music. Started when I updated the app sometime last week. I also notice that it starts to heat up quite a bit. I am playing the music with the screen turned off and phone in my pocket, also using bluetooth in the form of airpods.
