Inconsistent fullscreen when launching from python on Raspberry Pi

When starting a video in python using the python-vlc package and VLC 3.0.16 on a Raspberry Pi 4 running raspbian 11 and selecting the fullscreen option, the video only plays in fullscreen about 80% of the time. The other 20% of the time, the video starts in windowed mode in the center of the screen. This issue is very inconsistent, and I have not found a way to faithfully reproduce it. This is occurring using .mp4 files. I have not tested with other formats. Thank you!
