[Android] Subtitles are overlapped multiple times

Since the Google Play Feb 14th 2022 update that purported to "Fix the subtitles not working on some Android 12 devices", subtitles are now being drawn overlapping multiple times (see screenshot https://i.imgur.com/zOtyd00.png). There is a very noticeable stutter in the video playback when each new subtitle is drawn. The CPU spikes to 100% each time the subtitles change. My battery now dies before the movie ends. The stuttering and CPU spikes are gone when subtitles are turned off.

Update: I tried to revert to a previous version to avoid this issue. But the issue is present in previous versions all the way back to the latest 2.5.x series. At this point I gave up going backwards any further.

So, I am mistaken that the issue was introduced in the Feb 14th update. This issue has been present for a while. The video file is a .mkv container with about 20 subtitles of various languages.
