Audio blast when switching video files in MacOS

I'm experiencing an issue with VLC Version 3.0.11 on an Intel64/MacOS machine where, when I am playing one video file and in Finder I double click on another video file, VLC produces a short blast of audio when switching between the two files. (Sounds like square wave, ~220Hz, max volume, about half a second long) This happens sporadically and doesn't appear to be caused by any particular file or combination of files. If I'm sorting through several dozen video files, it might happen half a dozen times.
