VLC is not able to read a video with external subtitle files

VLC is not able to play a video with external subtitles manually added by the menu. Also, VLC is not able to open the video when the video file and the external subtitle are in the same folder and have the same name.
I’m using a M1 (8-core GPU) MacBook Air with macOS 12.2 with VLC 3.0.16. I tried to reset the settings and to use both Universal and Apple Silicon binaries. I tried to the same manipulation on my Windows 10 Laptop with the same version of VLC and it worked.
