VLC fails to display subtitles when playing an audio file despite seeing the srt file

VLC correctly sees the srt file that matches the name of the mp3 file. It then fails to display the subtitles. If you switch on an audio visualisation, it does display the subtitles. As a minimum please could we be given a completely blank black visualisation as a workaround. Better, please could VLC automatically display a black area with the subtitles shown on it.
