Adaptive m3u8 playlist containing absolute URLs will not play

An adaptive m3u8 playlist (i.e. one HLS live stream with multiple resolutions) containing absolute URLs does not work in VLC. However, it does work in all other IPTV players. Testing VLC in Windows 10 and Linux reveals:

An adaptive m3u8 containing only 1 absolute URL does work in VLC.
An adaptive m3u8 containing multiple absolute URLs does not work in VLC.
An adaptive m3u8 containing any number of relative URLs does work in VLC.

Since VLC already works fine with relative URLs, I'm hoping a fix to accommodate absolute URLs should be reasonably easy.
