External subtitles aren't showing on network stream

I'm trying to stream free VOD content from dr.dk DRTV using VLC so I can watch it with English subtitles from external sources as opposed to the Danish subtitles available on the streaming site. I can get the stream URL with a video download helper extension and it streams perfectly using the 'open network stream' option in VLC.

I also downloaded the subtitles in SRT format separately from subscene, and I'm trying to add them to the streaming video by right click > subtitle > add subtitle file, after which the subtitle track looks selected, but the text just doesn't show.

The same external subtitle with the same method works perfectly if the video is downloaded and played from a local file instead of using the network stream option.

Windows 11
VLC 3.0.16 installed via scoop package manager
