Unable to play m3u8 HLS stream with http basic auth.

I am attempting to use VLC to play a HTTP Basic auth protected m3u8 stream. This works fine via MacOS Safari after logging in but does not appear to work in VLC (macOS). I have also tried with the FireTV Stick version of VLC and it seems to experience a similar problem.

When I remove the basic auth, the stream plays fine in VLC (macOS).

I have attempted to find a solution for this but couldn't seem to find anything - apologies if this is already known, if so please could I be pointed in the right direction.
