VLC crashes when saving media stream

When saving a media stream to a file, the VLC attempts to save repeatedly, asking whether to keep the existing file or overwrite. No matter what I choose, it keeps asking. Impossible to quit except by force-quitting. Running VLC Version 3.0.12 Vetinari (Intel 64bit)on an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017)4.2 GHz Intel Core i7; running OS X 10.14.6
