When converting a video it only converts the first few seconds

If you follow the procedure to convert between video formats, in my case .mov to .mp4 (or m4v apparently) it only saves the first few seconds to file. First time it was the first 24 seconds, second time 8. As far as I'm aware, this has actually been happening for a long time.
