Current subtitle doesn't display when turning on subtitles

When turning on subtitles, the current subtitle doesn't display. To replicate:

Turn on subtitles
Play until a subtitle is showing
Pause
Turn off subtitles
Turn on subtitles -- previously showing subtitle does not display

Activating subtitles at a point where there is a subtitle should display that subtitle.

This may be related to #18862. Subtitles now seem to display when seeking, but not when activating. I am on linux, v. 3.0.9.2, but I will assume this behaviour happens across platforms (please correct if wrong). It has never worked correctly to my knowledge in previous versions.
