audio fails on macOS when pausing playback

It doesn't happen every time, but will happen after I've paused and resumed VLC several times. It usually only takes four or five pause/resume cycles to make it fail. This is very frustrating, as I do this a lot when taking notes about videos.

My configuration: macOS Catalina 10.5.5, Macbook Pro 2020 13", VLC 3.0.11

The files I'm experiencing this problem with are .dvdmedia files, extracted from a DVD using Ripit.app, v 1.6.9 (http://thelittleappfactory.com/ripit/), with a video target setting of High Qualiity M4V.
