Ubuntu 20.04 and Multi-monitor = blank screen

VLC has been running fine on my Ubuntu 20.04 laptop until I added a second monitor. After adding the monitor when I open a video either by double clicking on the video or opening through the menu, I can hear the audio but the screen is blank. If I unplug the second monitor video displays correctly. VLC is version 3.0.10 (snap).

Steps I have tried:

  1. I have confirmed that the monitors are assigned correctly as primary and secondary in settings/display

  2. If I launch VLC and then drag the window to the 2nd monitor and then open a video file, it will play correctly on the 2nd monitor and continue playing correctly if I drag it back to the primary monitor.

  3. If I unplug the 2nd monitor and launch a video file it will play correctly on the primary laptop monitor.

  4. From VLC setings/video/output I tried switching from "Automatic" to every one of the available options without success.
